When Helping Hurts: Part 1--Initial thoughts questions

The authors posed the following questions and instructions at the beginning of Part 1 to "When Helping Hurts". I've answered the questions for myself. If anyone else would like to join me in answering and disucssing these, I'd be honored.
Instructions: Please write short answers (one sentence each) to the following questions:
- Why did Jesus come to earth?
- For what specific sins(s) was Old Testament Israel sent into captitivity? Do not just say "disobedience." Be specific. For example: "The Israelites were constantly robbing banks."
- What is the primary purpose of the church?

Answers to the questions:
1. Jesus came to earth to reconcile us to God and thereby return us to relationship with God and save us from eternal damnation.
2. The Jews were sent into captivity because of idolatry and for oppressing the poor (Isaiah 58).
3. The purpose of the Church is to take the message of God's salvation to all people and to teach new believers what Christ taught.
